CONSTRUCTIVITY

a balcony

On this older cottage-style home the customer wanted to add a balcony to the upstairs bedroom and replace a window  with an arch-top double door.  The customer had made a fairly detailed drawing of the balcony, and together we worked out specific details such as size, materials, and placement.  We specified the door size and he ordered that item.

CONSTRUCTIVITY framed the balcony with pressure treated lumber for longevity. It has numerous structural features to make it solid and sturdy.

CONSTRUCTIVITY finished it with ipe (also known as Brazilian cherry), a wood that is very beautiful and lasts a long time outdoors.  Ipe is extremely strong and dense, and will remain the dark color if treated, or will weather to a gray if left untreated.  The frame was solid-stained a dark green to match the trim on the rest of the house.

CONSTRUCTIVITY installed the arch-top doors with screen doors and painted it a dark red to contrast with the rest of the house.  The siding and other trim around the door is Hardi material, a  cement/wood fiber product that is extremely durable in harsh climates -- exterior wall is a Hardi stucco panel and trim is Hardi plank.
